Different Dog Breeds Learn Differently

Depending on what a breed of dog was bred for they may learn differently. Some dogs may learn from sight or understand a hand signal more readily than a verbal command. This article discusses about how sheep dogs and gun dogs seem to learn by sight with verbal gestures.

I've noticed with our dog Kota that he doesn't respond like Tanner and Daisy to training. I'm still working on figuring out how to get communicate better with him.

Different ways to train a dog
  • Some dogs will pick up behaviors from other dogs. You ask a trained dog to lie down and the other dog picks up on the behavior wanting to mimic the other dog.
  • Some learn from hand signals. They tend to be more sight oriented.
  • Some may learn better with food rewards. They tend to respond with their nose.
  • Some may learn better with verbal cues and praise. They are more sound oriented.

Dogs are all individuals and will learn differently so don't be afraid to try different methods if something isn't working.

  1. I really like this post. It upsets me when people try to train different dogs all the same way. You really have to get to know your dog and do what is best for him or her.
