We have been working through the training levels developed by Sue Ailsby which she developed as a schedule for training an assistance dog or just having a highly trained dog. Through some of my web surfing I have discovered a great PBS show, Through A Dogs Eyes, which not only highlights assistance training but the bond required to make the training work. The dogs can learn the tricks but without the bond they won't perform.
I can say from personal experience the all my dogs will listen to me faster than any one in the house because I have spent the most time with them. They are more closely bonded to me than any of the other members of the family.
