How Puppies Learn

With the acquisition of Bailey, this is the first time I have started training an approximately 8 week old puppy. She was eager to learn but seemed slow to grasp the concepts. Thought sit seemed to be something she picked up right from the start. She is approximately 12 weeks old now and today she seemed to really respond to the training. I noticed over this week that her responses seem to be getting faster.

Though I should say without having trained any other puppies from 8 weeks old I really have nothing to compare it to. I guess what I'm trying to say is that with Bailey having suffered from Parvo, she may not have felt in tip top shape causing her to learn slower.

She is starting to loose her puppy pot belly. Instead of being top heavy she has tended to be bottom heavy because it seems like her belly is about half her body. She seems to have gained her sea legs and is more steady walking up steps and running. She likes to almost bunny hop, which I have never seen any other dogs do.

  1. Puppies learn the same way adults do. I have seen puppies at 8 weeks really grasp things and have seen some that were a little slower. You are doing the right thing starting early. It's best to teach the good habits before they can develop bad ones.

  2. Ah puppies. They're so much fun. Just keep doing what you're doing. Cosistency is a big key and having everyone in the family on the same page is very helpful. Really a big part of training any dog is training the humans first.
